College Green

The rain cleared just in time for the procession of graduates into the tent for Mitchell College’s 71st Commencement Ceremony and Inauguration of Janet L. Steinmayer as seventh president.

Students were festive with messages on their caps ranging from “Thanks, Dad,” to “Adventure is out there,” and “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to pursue them.” Families, friends, and children cheered them on as they entered the tent.

The ceremony started with the National Anthem sung by graduate Kikora Davis and an invocation by Reverend Elizabeth Scheuerman.

Greetings were given by Goveror Dannel Malloy, who after sharing the experiences of his own learning differences, told students “not to give us on yourself … challenge is exciting.”

Greetings were also given by New London Mayor Daryl Finizio; Associate Professor of Communication Arts, Marc Goldsmith; Director of Human Resource, Jonathan Howell; and graduate and Presidential Intern, Dazjavia Williams.

President Steinmayer was then installed by Elizabeth Ivey, Ph.D., chairperson of the Board of Trustees. In her Presidential Address, Steinmayer spoke of being a non-traditional college president, and emphasized how Mitchell, too, was non-traditional and at the forefront of change, with adaptability, community and diversity as a core parts of the institution’s DNA. (Check back for the complete text of her speech which will be available on Tuesday afternoon, May 19.)
