Step 1 - Get Email
To fill out the FAFSA form and stay in touch with Mitchell College, you must have an email address. If you do not, you can obtain one for free. Click on either link below to set up a free account.
You will be asked to provide your e-mail address when completing the FAFSA. The U.S. Department of Education will communicate with you and Mitchell College about your FAFSA using email.

Step 2 - Get a PIN
Apply for a Federal Personal Identification Number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov (if you don’t already have one). If you have a PIN and have forgotten it, you can request a duplicate. You will need this PIN to electronically sign your FAFSA. If you are a dependent, your parents will also need to get a PIN at www.pin.ed.gov to electronically sign the FAFSA. This will ensure the quickest, most accurate filing process.
In addition, your PIN will allow you to:

Step 3 - File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
- The FAFSA form must be completed every year, as soon after January 1 as possible
- It is acceptable to estimate tax information on the FAFSA
- If a student misses his or her state’s deadline for filing the FAFSA, the student will not receive state aid for which the student
may be entitled
To be considered for any type of need-based financial aid (grants, loans, or scholarships) from the federal government, state, or college, you must file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Mitchell College Federal School Code is 001393. Priority deadlines for filing the FAFSA apply:
- April 1 for students enrolling in September (fall semester)
- November 1 for students enrolling January (spring semester)
The Financial Aid Office recommends that you file the FAFSA well before these deadlines.
We also recommend that you file electronically using FAFSA on The Web (www.fafsa.ed.gov). It has proven to be the fastest, most efficient, and most accurate application method. Results are sent to you and Mitchell College about a week after filing if your application is electronically signed with a PIN.
Instead of using FAFSA on The Web, applicants may file using a paper FAFSA form. It can be obtained by calling Federal Financial Aid Hotline (800) 433-3243. Results are usually delivered to schools in four to six weeks.
Please note that you complete the FAFSA once every school year after January 1 if you want federal and Mitchell College need-based aid. You must also be accepted into a degree program.

Step 4 - Review Student Aid Report (SAR)
After your FAFSA is processed, you will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR). Electronic filers who provided an e-mail address will receive an e-mail providing an electronic link to their SAR. Electronic filers who did not provide an e-mail address and those who completed a paper FAFSA will receive a paper SAR in the mail.
Once you receive your SAR, you should review it for accuracy. Students who received their SAR electronically can make their corrections online at www.fafsa.ed.gov

Step 5 - Federal Review
After your FAFSA data is received by the school, you may be required to submit additional information to the Financial Aid Office. Additional information is often required for one or more of the following reasons:
- – Your FAFSA data is matched against various federal databases (Social Security, Selective Service, Dept. of Veteran Affairs, etc…) to make sure you meet the basic eligibility requirements for federal financial aid. If it cannot be determined that you meet the basic eligibility requirements, you may be asked to submit any of the following:Database Mismatch
- Copy of your Social Security Card
- Copy of your birth certificate
- Proof of U.S. citizenship
- Selective Service registration confirmation
- Copy of your alien registration card
- DD-214 to establish eligibility as a veteran of the armed forces
|
- – Some federal aid applicants are selected for a process called “verification.” If you are selected for this process, you will be required to submit the following to the Financial Aid Office:Verification
- Verification Worksheet (See “Forms” in Financial Aid tab of www.mitchell.edu)
- Copy of student’s Federal tax transcript
- Copy of parent’s Federal tax transcript (Dependent students only)
- Copy of W-2’s
|
Please be aware that all errors, mismatches and verification issues must be resolved before your financial aid can be finalized and applied to your account.

Step 6 - Award Notification
After your FAFSA application is processed and all required information has been reviewed, Mitchell College will send notification of your federal, state, and institutional financial aid awards. Any grants that you are eligible for will be credited towards your tuition charges.
Not every student will qualify for a grant, or be eligible for a grant large enough to cover their educational costs.
First time borrowers at Mitchell College will also need to complete a Loan Entrance Counseling session and Master Promissory Note at www.studentloans.gov as required by the Department of Education.
Families who need additional funds to meet their financial need may apply for The Federal Direct Parent Loan Program (PLUS), which allows parents to borrow money from the federal government to help pay for their child’s educational expenses. Parents may apply for PLUS loans at www.studentloans.gov.
